![]() ![]() The chap who was framing at Michaels was an artist. However, I've had 3 other vintage concert posters framed at Michaels, each woth a value of $400 - $800 and all look amazing. The 70% or 80% off custom framing Michaels routinely advertises is a bit of salesmanship. It was done perfectly! I was also told at Michaels, if I didn't like the final product, I could come back and they'd swap out the frame or the glass for free. Hands down I chose Michaels and it came back looking like something out of a Hardrock Cafe. The frame which I got at Michaels was also much more ornate than the one I could have ordered at the local shop. Michaels quoted me $310 for basically the same thing with a 1 week turnaround time and Masterpiece Acrylic with anti-glare vs. The local frame shop quoted me around $550 to float the poster on a velvet backer, uv protecting glass and a somewhat ornate wooden frame. It wasn't exactly a small poster measuring about 22 inches x 14 inches. I priced out framing at stores for a Bill Graham original first printing concert poster for a Filmore East show The Doors did in 1967. but in the end, that only takes you so far. I get the whole 'keep it local' argument. If you do end up going to Michael's however, they do run special sales sometimes for getting 2/3 pieces done together which ARE actually worth it. So that way when you hear $230 and wince at your wallet, they can say "oh but it was originally $700 so think of how much you're saving!! Do minimum of what you like and dont listen to their pitches, they only do it because that's what corporate pushes. I think $230 is a little much for an 18×24 print tbh. "Museum Quality" is totally unnecessary unless you're framing the damn Mona Lisa. Then your glass choices come in, you dont need the fancy stuff. Then your mat choices come in, but the price on those wont change much with quality, more with quantity. Since it's a print and assuming not so heavy, you could probably go cheaper than what you chose originally. However, you do need a certain amount of thickness depending on how heavy that art is to support it. The bigger, the fancier you get, the more expensive it will be. The majority of your cost is going into that frame.
